Leadership with Heart

Karen Martínez was born and raised in East San José, where she learned early that strong communities are built by neighbors who show up for each other.

At just 16, Karen became a mother — a life-changing moment that didn't slow her down. It fueled her drive to work harder, dream bigger, and open doors for the next generation.

Karen and her husband Angel have been married 27 years. They raised their blended family right here in East San José — in these schools, these parks, these neighborhoods. This is home.

Karen's commitment to her community started the way real leadership always does — on the ground. As a neighborhood association volunteer, a cheer coach, and a team mom, she showed up before anyone gave her a title.

That grassroots commitment grew into something bigger. Karen was a founding parent of Alpha Blanca Alvarado Public School, which today serves more than 1,000 East San José families. She went on to serve on the Alum Rock Union School Board, where she helped lead the largest facilities upgrade in district history — better campuses, better classrooms, better outcomes for kids.

In 2018, voters elected Karen to the San José Evergreen Community College District Board of Trustees. She has spent every year since expanding college access, strengthening workforce programs, and making sure students have what they need to succeed. Her record speaks for itself: balanced budgets, fiscal discipline, and $709 million secured for students and the community.

Karen is not a career politician. She is the kitchen table issues candidate — the one who knows that what keeps East San José families up at night isn't abstract policy, it's whether their street is safe, whether their grandkids are in good schools, and whether their neighborhood is being taken care of. She listens first, does the actual work, and delivers real results.

Whether improving schools, cleaning up neighborhoods, or building programs that keep families safe and kids on the right path — her approach never changes: work hard, build trust, and stay focused on what actually matters.

On the San José City Council, Karen will fight to make East San José safer, cleaner, and stronger — so every family has the opportunity to live their best life.

Karen's Plan

East San José deserves a kitchen table issues candidate — someone whose priorities are set not by downtown donors or political insiders, but by the real conversations happening in homes across this community. Karen has spent decades at those tables. Now she's taking those conversations to City Hall.

She's not still figuring it out. She has already proven she can deliver — on school boards, in neighborhood associations, at kitchen tables, and on your front porch. Here's what she'll fight for from day one:

Public Safety & Vibrant Neighborhoods

Safe streets and clean neighborhoods are the foundation of everything else. Karen will work to fully staff our police, reduce crime, improve traffic safety, and partner directly with residents to fight blight and rebuild trust block by block.

Real Solutions on Housing & Homelessness

We can address homelessness with urgency and compassion — building affordable housing, cutting red tape, and providing humane, effective shelter solutions while keeping our streets and parks safe and clean for every family.

Education & Opportunity for Every Child

Strong schools are the heart of strong neighborhoods. Karen will partner with educators, parents, nonprofits, and local organizations to make sure every child gets a quality education and every family has the resources to succeed.

A Stronger Local Economy

East San José deserves good-paying jobs and thriving small businesses. Karen will cut bureaucracy, support local entrepreneurs, and bring in investment that creates real opportunity — without erasing the character of our community.

Infrastructure That Works

Potholes, broken sidewalks, and neglected parks are not acceptable. Karen will prioritize fixing what's broken, maintaining our parks, and expanding neighborhood clean-up programs that make a visible difference.

A City Hall That Works for You

Residents deserve transparency, accountability, and access — not runaround. Karen will fight for open communication, real public access to decision-making, and clear reporting so you always know where your tax dollars are going.

East San José is not a place to be managed. It's a community to be invested in. Karen has been investing her whole life. Now she's taking that work to City Hall.
